There is something special about listening to a radio you build yourself. Many people choose a radio circuit as their first real project. It’s a great project as it something that can provide hours of entertainment for the builder. Unfortunately finding a circuit that works well and doesn’t cost a fortune can be a big problem. The New Kanga Mk2 AM Radio kit gives good performance and is low cost so a double win.
It would make a great first kit that is easy to build and works well without any alignment problems. The board layout is designed to a good beginner’s project with extra-large solder pads and wide spacing of parts that make it easy to solder.

The radio uses the well known TA7462 IC but the circuit is a little different from most you will find, these little differences make a big difference to the performance. I doubt if you will find another TA7462 radio that works as well!

For experimenters an on board jumper will allow reception of BBC Radio 4 on LW.

This would be a great Buildathon or club project, it was designed to be suitable for the novice training scheme here in the UK.

The radio uses a single AAA battery and only draws a couple of mA so will run for a long time on a single cell.

You will need standard headphones fitted with a stereo 3.5mm plug , the type that most mobile phones or mp3 players come with work great or even better , use it with an external amplifier such as the Kanga Bench Amplifier Kit for room filling volume.
